Birthdays
Birthdays are very special day to kindergarteners! You are welcome to send in a healthy treat, and we will have special activities throughout the day to help celebrate your child’s big day. We will celebrate summer birthdays either on the half- birthday or on a day near the end of the school year. I am not able to pass out birthday invitations at school, per district policy.
Centers
We will have literacy and math centers each week. The purpose of these centers is to allow your child time to practice skills and concepts, work in small groups, and continue to build on cooperation and problem solving skills.
Dismissals/Arrivals
Children will be welcomed into the building beginning at 8:35 each morning. We will use the doors right on the playground. We take extra care at the end of each day to make sure that every child gets to the right person and place. Those attending Bridges or riding the bus will be escorted (either by teacher aide or 5th grade cadet) to the appropriate place. The “picker-uppers” will be dismissed at the kindergarten doors. We will keep the children inside until we see you or the person designated to pick up your child. If your pick-up plans change, please let us know wither by email or note.
Examine Your Child’s Backpack
Please make sure to check your child’s backpack each night. There are many handouts, notes, work, and projects that are sent home every day!
Folders (BEE Books)
Each student is expected to have the his/her BEE Book each day. All notes for the teacher and the office go inside the folder. There is a pouch for lunch and field trip money, as well as an envelope for homework books. Our BEE Books will also contain classroom information and learning targets for each month.
Gym Shoes
Children are expected to wear gym shoes on the days they go the gym classes. An extra pair can be kept in the lockers if your child is able to independently change shoes. Our gym days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Home Reading
The students will bring home books every week for homework. Reading at home is a very important aspect of kindergarten. Reading for 15 to 20 minutes a night will greatly influence your child’s academic progress. The books will be read at school prior to coming home, either with a parent volunteer or in a guided reading group.
Independence
It is my goal to help your child to learn and gain confidence by being independent throughout the year. Organizing and caring for belongings, completing work in the classroom, and making good choices will be modeled and practiced daily.

Kinder-News
Each Friday I will email our “Kinder-News.” This newsletter will contain basic information about the events and concepts that we enjoyed throughout the week, reminders for the next week, and special events or changes in the calendar. Please make sure that I have your current email address. If you would prefer a paper copy, please let me know.
Lunch
Hot Lunch is available for purchase. Money paid towards hot lunch will be credited to your child’s account, and you will be notified when the account is running low. Our lunch time is 11:15am-12:05pm.
Many Friends
We have 16 friends in our kindergarten class. Throughout the day, we also interact frequently with Mrs. Sullivan’s kindergarten friends, first grade friends at lunch time, and our fourth grade buddies several times each month.
Notes
Please send any notes or communication in your child’s BEE Book. Newsletters and calendars will be sent home each month.
Orders for Books
Your child will have an opportunity to order books through Firefly and Seesaw Book Clubs. This is an inexpensive way to get books for your child. Think ahead, books make excellent birthday presents, Christmas presents, and special holiday treats.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
We hold formal parent/teacher conferences in Fall and again in Spring. I will email you with sign-up information.
Questions
If you have questions and/or concerns throughout the year, please feel free to contact me.
Recess
We will have at least one outdoor recess each day. Please dress for the weather.
Snacks
We will have two snacks each day. Please send in a healthy snack each day for our morning “Brain Food Break.” We will keep a supply of crackers for our afternoon snack. I will send a note home when our cupboard is looking bare.
Take Home Books
We will create many classbooks throughout the year that will be shared with your family. When your child has a turn to take home a book, please take a moment to read it together (and send it back the next day!).
Unique Field Trips
Please check the BEE Book and classroom newsletters for field trip information. We will take several trips throughout the year and will ask for parent helpers to join us! Younger siblings are not able to join us on field trips due to limited space on the bus and at our destination.
Volunteers in the Classroom
Parents are always welcome to volunteer in the classroom. Please let me know if you are interested in spending some time in kindergarten. You will need to have a background check on file in the office.
Water Bottles
Water bottles are welcome in the classroom, but please make sure that they are easily handled by your child.
eXhausted!
We have a very busy day in kindergarten. Your children will be working hard all day long and may come home exhausted, hungry, and grumpy. This will most likely change as the year goes on and the transition to a full day program becomes a bit easier.
Zzzzzzzzzzz!
Make sure that your child is getting enough sleep each night. This is especially important for the beginning of the year as the children are transitioning into a full day at school. Children who are tired have a hard time focusing and learning and are not in the mood to cooperate with others!
If your child is sick and unable to participate in school activities, please call or email the school office.
